The Productive Garden Companion by Natasha Morgan

At over 420 pages, The Productive Garden Companion isn't a quick read, but it is comprehensive. Based in Victoria, Australia, the author leads the reader through the many chapters as though she were leading us through her garden. In fact, in many ways, we discover her garden philosophy and the intricacies of how it works.
Over four parts, the book begins with the purpose of garden design. So much of what is grown in a garden is used as mental nourishment; the colours and scents releasing dopamine and serotonin. But to design a garden, whether a small plot, containers, or a larger acreage, Morgan suggests you need to sit back and observe. With a design brief, you can begin to map out what your space is required to produce and how it will function.
“Remember, your site is never a silent space; it’s always speaking. Your job is to learn how to listen to it.” There are extensive messages; maybe there are corners of the garden that need more shelter, get too much shelter or need structural companions.
The author covers sustainable practices, soil care and innovative ways to welcome wildlife that utilise layering, light and shadow, mood and movement. The book includes interviews with fellow notable gardeners, plus QR codes linking to additional material.
Morgan believes adding chickens to the garden helps create more than eggs and manure. They help magical moments happen, some so small or quick they may be easily missed, while others are monumental. The book also includes some wonderful recipes.
Natasha Morgan believes a garden is where a legacy begins. She is an internationally recognised landscape architect and lifelong gardener and educator, and The Productive Garden Companion is her practical and reassuring way of walking alongside you as you garden.
