If you’re juggling the demands of ageing parents and children of your own, you’ll find Catherine Newman’s latest novel very amusing!

Sandwich is cleverly told over a single week on a three-generation family holiday in Cape Cod. Rocky is the narrator, and many of her wry observations are laugh-out-loud funny!

For the past two decades, Rocky has cherished her family’s annual escape to a rustic holiday rental. She is joined by her husband, their two young adult children and for part of the time, her parents. Willa is at university and Jamie has brought along his girlfriend, Maya. The family arrives at the familiar holiday home and reverts to their nostalgic vacation routines, sandwich-making included!

The quirky home holds countless memories but now Rocky is caught between her children who are old enough to be fun and her own parents. She is incredibly aware of the passage of time and wants to freeze this moment.

However, every family has secrets and hers is no exception. Rocky transports us to when she first became a mother and returns to the present to confide in her daughter. Multiple secrets are layered in the plot and revealed in time.

Catherine captures the chaos and humour of family life brilliantly. This is countered with thoughtful musings on long marriages, pregnancies (past and present), menopause and empty-nesting. Catherine’s writing is funny, insightful and her characters are relatable. It’s the ideal holiday or long weekend read.
