It seems everyone wants to go to Japan currently, so this pocket-sized gem has everything you might want to know about this fascinating country. New Zealand author Peter Shaw has visited Japan numerous times and generously shares his knowledge. This is a love letter about the country’s culture: its art, architecture, food, religion, history and people.
I’ve never been to Japan, but I’ve come away fascinated by Peter’s account of his visits. It’s not a traditional travel guide by any stretch – but rather a very personal account of his many visits, and he’s included many photographs from his trip that enhance the engaging text. It’s a very different culture from the Western world, but Peter brings to life this unique place, with just the right blend of history and contemporary, ancient and modern. After reading I have an understanding of where I might like to visit, the food I might try and the experiences I might also enjoy.
I predict people will read this book for enjoyment but then highlight places and information for when they travel. It’s a perfect size for popping into a handbag for reference while travelling.
Read Japan: An Autobiography and delight in all that Japan has to offer.
