Badjelly by Ryan Cooper, illustrated by Róisín Kelly

Writer: NZ BookloversNZ Booklovers

Ryan Cooper successfully updates the classic Badjelly the Witch by Spike Milligan for a new generation. This brilliant retelling is for fans of all ages as Rose and Tim try to find Lucy, their beloved cow, and avoid being made into boy/girl soup by Badjelly, who is desperately trying to restore her dwindling powers.

Ryan has a real talent for writing in rhyme, and reading this book aloud is a true delight, and will engage children and adults of all ages. This new version of Badjelly is faithful to the original, but it also fleshes out many of the characters who only appear briefly in the original book, so it feels nicely rounded.

The language of Badjelly is so much fun and will have children laughing out loud. Who can resist, ‘Stinkypoo, stinkypoo, knickers knickers knickers?’ Like the original book, the language is wonderfully engaging for children, with just the right amount of slightly bonkers humour as the story progresses and Lucy and Tim continue on their adventure.

The illustrations are absolutely superb and add another enjoyable element to this story, with details that enhance the reading experience. Róisín Kelly’s illustrations are colourful but also wonderfully atmospheric, making this another high-quality production from Duckling Publishing for the entire family to enjoy.

Quirky, humorous and entertaining, Badjelly is a must-have book for families everywhere. As a bonus, TVNZ is airing the animated series.
