Even though families today continue to take different forms and push norms well beyond the nuclear, young children can still be acutely aware their own family situation may be different to others.
This is the premise of This is My Dad, in which young Leo gets wound up when his teacher announces a special class celebration of fathers. He’s anxious because he’s never even met his dad - so while everyone else is excitedly planning their presentations and inviting their dads along, he’s not sure what to do.
Eventually he realises that while he may not have a conventional father, his fantasy-author mum does anything a dad would do: make him his favourite pizza, grow his imagination, give him kisses and cuddles. This is My Dad is a sweet celebration of solo parenting.
