When Getwin, Lea and Buckle – with the help of Sharp the raven – unearth the trickster Book of Blacke, they embark on a quest to undo the controls on their world, seeking justice for the Scribes who are forced to work and for those who have never been allowed to read or write.

This gripping adventure is the unmissable sequel to The Raven's Eye Runaways.

Author Claire Mabey transports readers back to the city of Wyle and a world of fantasy and magic. She builds on the world, and the characters, so readers do need to make sure they have read the first book.

Mabey crafts a rich and wondrous world, with secrets lurking in every corner. From a magical boat to an enchanted apple, sleeping trees and secret societies, there is plenty to be uncovered.

The story bursts with lush detail, and every word is perfectly placed - even Getwin doing something as simple as eating grapes is a reader's delight. Mabey's love of literature and reading bursts from the page both in her writing style and story subject.

Each chapter flows between different characters, shifting viewpoints and the action. Mabey's characters are well developed and realistic. As mentioned, she builds on the first book, and it was fascinating to dive deeper into each character. Mabey doesn't shy away from the complexity of life, giving her characters both triumphs and troubles.

There are many layers to the story, and I found it fascinating to read in these current times - there are hints of protest, of climate, of humanity, of right and wrong. Her characters fight against oppression and must grapple with knowledge that is both helpful and hurtful.

The Raven's Eye Rebellion is a book you will not want to put down. But at the same time, you'll force yourself to slow down so you can linger in Wyle and with Mabey's characters for longer. It is a gripping, magical book full of curiosity, intelligence and action and an absolute must-read.
