The Power of Focus by Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen and Les Hewitt

For years, The Power of Focus, by Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen and Les Hewitt, has been providing readers the world over with the tools for change. 2013 saw the release of the 10th anniversary edition of this book, still a must-read for anyone who wants increased productivity, focus, motivation and success, not just in business, but in life too.

In The Power of Focus, the authors of the much beloved Chicken Soup for the Soul series present ten strategies to help towards achieving the things you want. The topics are what you’d expect: planning, being proactive, consistency, and maintaining balance. That said, the presentation of this book, the style of the authors is such that you will feel like they are talking straight to you. This is more like listening to a presentation – or like having a conversation – than reading a self-help book. There is a friendliness and chattiness about this book that, not only makes it a pleasure to read, but also makes you want to go out and show the authors that you can do it.

Canfield, Hansen and Hewitt offer no-nonsense, straightforward advice, with examples to highlight key elements, and tools and charts to give you ways to practice. What I love about this book is that it is actually helpful, choosing a bottom up approach to getting ahead. A bottom up approach is all about attending to the small things first, changing bad habits and setting new ones one at a time in a practical, realistic way.

If making positive changes at work or in other areas of your life is something that needs attention, then start by picking up a copy of The Power of Focus. In the meantime, here are my top favourite strategies to achieving your goals:

· Each week take one day completely off

· Spend time with your family

· Ask more

· Keep your promises

· And my favourite…take a nap
