“Nestled at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa, the Greek Islands offer a captivating array of landscapes, sculpted by the vast, shimmering seas that surround them. Picture yourself wandering these sun-kissed gems, where the Aegean, Ionian and the Libyan Seas have inspired ancient myths and vibrant traditions.”
For Carolina Doriti, chef and food writer, The Greek Islands Cookbook is a celebration of her heritage and flavours of the Mediterranean.
“As someone enchanted by the magic of the Greek Islands, writing this cookbook has been a heartfelt journey of love and discovery. My grandfather, George, with whom I was very close, hailed from the Cycladic island of Paros and was a passionate storyteller and food lover.”
Doriti’s fascination with Greek island cuisine began as a personal adventure, exploring the unique flavours and traditions of each island. Her years spent connecting with local cooks and producers shine through in recipes that showcase distinct regional identities, from hearty brunches like Fourtalia (eggs with sausage, potatoes, and mint) to sweet treats such as Sfakianes pites (cheese-filled pancakes) drizzled with honey and cinnamon.
The cookbook is organised for ease and inspiration, with chapters ranging from breakfast & brunch, small plates to share, fish & seafood, and meats, to pies & pastries, grains & pulses, vegetable mains & sides, salads, sweet treats, including the ultimate Greek-style iced coffee! My personal highlights include creamy fava (yellow split peas), layered aubergine and potato bakes, and vibrant, refreshing Greek salads in several varieties.
Carolina makes it easy for home cooks to bring the sun-drenched flavours of the Greek islands into their kitchens. Turning each page is an experience in itself, with stunning photography capturing the essence of island life, including shimmering blue seas and rustic tables.
“What I seek in food is nourishment and fulfilment. To create through cooking smells and flavours that evoke warming feelings and memories common and relatable to us all. As a chef, food writer, and cookbook author, I find myself in a constant and passionate search for lost recipes, old cooking methods, and century-long traditions that ought to be preserved,” says Carolina.
Whether you’re an experienced cook or simply longing to recreate the flavours of a Greek holiday, you’ll be inspired by The Greek Islands Cookbook.
