Marvin Makes a Friend by Nadia Lim

No longer a newly hatched chick, teenage Marvin is trying to find his flock. A sequel to celebrity cook Nadia Lim's bestselling debut book, Marvellous Marvin, this latest adventure sees Marvin meeting many animals on the farm. But despite all the animals, he can't quite find any that will be his family.

This is a fun little story, with readers following Marvin's journey now that he is a handsome, and cocky, rooster. Marvin does eventually find his family, and Lim leaves it up to illustrator Fifi Colston to give readers a hint at what might happen next. When my little readers picked up the clues, there were smiles and smirks all round.

Colston does a fabulous job again with bringing Lim's world to life, we especially loved Marvin strutting in front of the older roosters. Colston's animals are full of personality and pizazz.

Lim also includes family photos, farm and food facts, and a delicious corn fritter recipe. While it may not be intentional, including these elements within the book will inspire young writers too. Lim shows how we all have a story to tell, and shows children how to use their everyday life as an inspiration.

I'm always suspicious of celebrities penning picture books, but Lim has created another gorgeous book that is both entertaining and educational.

All author proceeds go to charities HUHA and Garden to Table, making this feel-good story just that extra bit sweeter.
