One of the most popular walking routes in the world, known for its spiritual and cultural significance, I was interested to see that there are six ways Lonely Planet suggest tackling this trip.  The classic 767 km walk is from St. Jean Pied de Port to Santiago de Compostela, and takes around 33 days. However, you can also complete it in around 26 days by racing, or take 38 days or more by going at a slower pace. For those with limited time, there is an option to travel from Astorga to Cabo Fisterra, which showcases the Camino at its most iconic, and it takes 15 days. Alternatively, you can opt for the cycling option from Pamploan to Santiago de Compostela, which takes approximately one to two weeks. There is also a Sarrai to Santiago de Compostela option that takes 4 to 5 days.

With these options in mind, this colourful guide details everything, from the mountains to the historic rivers and forests. This is an excellent guide, as it offers detailed descriptions of each section of the famous Camino, along with personal stories from people who have completed the walk. The tips for first timers are invaluable, and it is really helpful to be able to get information about the wildlife to expect and the fascinating history of the area.

It is humbling to think these medieval trails carry a history of pilgrimage spanning 1200 years.

There are detailed walking maps along the way, providing everything you need to know about taking a break and what you might encounter. With colour photos and info about what to see, where to stay and the best places to eat, your trip will be sorted.
