Lisa Carrington Chases a Champion

Eight-year-old Lisa is determined to participate in a big surf competition but is plagued by self-doubt and fear of failure. With encouragement from her coach, family, and a top paddler named Māia, Lisa trains hard and improves, but a close call with a wave days before the competition shakes her confidence. After finding solace and regaining her self-belief with her mum’s help, Lisa bravely competes on the big day, conquering her fears. Our GOAT in the boat, Dame Lisa Carrington (Te Aitanga-a-Māhaki, Ngāti Porou) doesn't really need much introduction as New Zealand's most decorated Olympian.

In this picture book, set in Ōhope, where she first learnt to paddle, Carrington takes readers back to where it all began. It's a story that provides little insights into building both physical and mental strength, about motivation and resilience.

While Carrington tells her story through sport, children are given the space to think about how to apply these important life lessons in other contexts as well.

There's lovely little touches of Carrington's own te reo Māori journey within the story too, as she touches on the maramataka (Māori lunar calendar). A te reo Māori edition of the book, Ko Lisa Carrington me te Toa Whakaihuwaka, has also been released.

My younger readers were absolutely enthralled by both versions of the book. Not only is the story great - and bonus, it doesn't rely on rhyme - but the illustrations are captivating. Illustrator Scott Pearson uses vivid colour and clean lines to portray Carrrington's training journey, her challenges and her determination. Also featuring her parents, her two older brothers and her dog Colin, there's so much to spot within the art.

The book rounds off with a personal note from Carrington where she espouses the importance of reading and of being your best is a lovely touch.

Lisa Carrington Chases A Champion is an excellent addition to any child's bookshelf. Carrington will inspire the next generation to experience the thrills and sensation of sport, but more importantly, to learn about vital life skills.
