Judgement Day by Mali Waugh

Judgement Day is a page-turning legal thriller that will have you frantically turning the pages to find out what happens next. Kaye Bailey is a family law judge who has been brutally murdered in her own chambers. Given the security in the building, it would seem this might be an inside job. And it would seem that not all her colleagues were a fan, but would one of them really do something so violent in their workplace? Or was this someone from one of the many cases she has ruled over, who somehow managed to get into the building to murder her?

Detective Jillian Basset is determined to find the person responsible for this brutal murder, but she has her own problems to deal with. She is just returning from maternity leave, desperate to leave her baby with her husband. This is the baby she wanted so much, but now it is the child she can’t seem to love, and certainly a baby she doesn’t want to be around. She spends increasingly long hours working on the case in her desire to solve this brutal crime, but if she is being honest with herself, she also wants to avoid being at home with her husband and child. Something is going to have to give…

This is a fantastic thriller with a compelling plot and believable characters. Judgement Day perfectly brings together a police procedural, a legal drama, and a woman in personal turmoil in a satisfying debut novel. Recommended!
