Duck is back in this fun, colourful companion to Duck Goes Meow and its sequel How to Be a Cat.

Learning from Mama Cat, Duck has already mastered “Meow.” Now Duck learns “Oink” from Pig, and from Horse a very enthusiastic “Neigh”. But when Duck waddles down to the pond, things take an unexpected turn, because Duck can’t Quack. Instead, Duck uses newly acquired skills to teach others a new ‘language’.

This story is inspired by a true story, that author Juliette MacIver helpfully links within the book, where a mother cat adopts three ducklings along with her kittens. MacIver's latest in the series imagines Duck learning a new language and as usual, her own language is spot on. Her rhythm sings and every word is pitch perfect.

It's a fantastic book to read aloud, with plenty of chances for expression. This book would also make a wonderful read for children who are learning to read with expression.

Illustrator Carla Martell uses bold colour and simple yet eye-catching artwork to bring the quirky animals alive. Her illustrations burst with colour, contrast and movement.

Duck's New Words is a delightful read for younger readers, packed with energy and humour that will become a firm family favourite.
