NZ Booklovers chats with E.J. Squires about writing and her latest book, Savage Run.
When you were young did you imagine you would be writing books?
No! I always wanted to be a ballerina. I did that for a few years, but when I started having children, I felt it was too much to keep up with the crazy ballet schedule. I always loved to read, and enjoyed writing songs and poetry, but never in my wildest dreams did I think I would become an author.
Who are some authors that you enjoy reading?
There are so many. Paulo Coelho, Alan Paton, Veronica Roth, Anthony Robbins (non-fiction), Suzanne Collins, Margit Sandemo (a Norwegian author) and many others.
Why do you enjoy writing fiction?
Because I can create any kind of world I want and live in that world for some time. And I can explore characters and create interesting people.
Tell us a little bit about your book Savage Run.
I started writing it in March of 2014, and I just finished it in December 2014. It’s a Dystopian Young Adult novel about a girl who refuses to accept the life she’s been given. As a Laborer (a slave, basically) in this society, she has no freedom and will serve a Master her entire life. When she finds out that there’s a government program for young men in which they can receive their freedom, she decides to disguise herself up as a teenage boy and enter the program. It’s illegal for her, but she risks it anyway. But the obstacles are very hard and soon she realizes she’s way in over her head. There’s romance, suspense, heart ache, relationship issues… ultimately, it is a story about finding oneself and succeeding against all odds.
Where did you get the inspiration for the story and characters?
I love both romance and suspense and a compelling story. I always enjoy reading books of young people who have a dream and finally succeed. Initially, the story was supposed to be about a race, but it changed to where the story was more political in nature. I have an excellent editor who helps me.
Are you busy writing any new books?
Of course. I am writing the second book in my Desirable Creatures series, and it’s called Blufire. And I have White Witch Back Warlock series that I have written the first draft to. Both are paranormal romances. I am also working on the third book in the Viking Blood Saga.
