NZ Booklovers talks with Australian nutritionist and author of The Happy Life Lola Berry about happiness, food and finding inspiration.
How would you describe the work that you do?
With out sounding like too much of a hippie, I just do what feels right in my heart. Which is, I write books, talk on TV, film health content, teach yoga and live my truth.
What do you love most about your work?
I feel so lucky that I get to live my passion! And I love learning and growing so I feel like things are constantly changing and I get to learn and grow so much, I think that’s how you develop as person and become the best version of you.
What are you working on right now?
I’m writing the next book, about to open a smoothie bar in Melbourne, filming a pilot and about to tour with “The Happy Cookbook” in America.
The presentation of your books is always utterly beautiful. How much are you a part of this process?
I’m there on every single day of shooting, I fly down to Melbs to be there. I love the whole creative process and the team is so talented. I just love being in their presence.
Your recipes are both creative and delicious. Where do you find your inspiration to keep coming up with fresh ideas?
They come for everywhere, a meal a mate cooks for me, a meal out sometimes just an ingredient I love, I always write in the intro to a recipe where the idea has come from.
Your top 3 must-have pantry ingredients are…?
Coconut oil, cinnamon and chillies. Use all of them pretty much every day.
Your favourite go-to meal and/or snack at the moment is…?
It’s my trusty crispy salmon with avocado salad. I love it so much and a variation makes it into every book!
You’re a very busy woman involved in all sorts of projects? How do you manage to keep balanced and grounded?
YOGA! It’s the gift I give myself and share with others when I teach! And mother nature, Biophilia is my favourite word in the entire world and it means the healing power of mother nature on humans!
You’re having a bad day…how do you turn it around?
I watch a Steve Irwin doco (he’s my hero), and get out in nature, I try to swim in the ocean if I’m stressed
You are an inspiration to so many. Who inspires you?
Steve Irwin – I love his authentic passion and enthusiasm. And my dad, he always says “keep kicking goals girl!”
What’s the most recent book you’ve read?
This way of life – it’s a doco turned book and based on a family living off the land. My favourite quote is “what do you do for a living?” and the response is “I live for a living.” Very special!
What are your top tips for happiness?
Listen to your heart, it always knows best and back yourself. When you believe in yourself, that’s when the magic happens!
