Ready Player One, by Ernest Cline

Title: Ready Player One

Author: Ernest Cline

Published: 2011

Five word synopsis: near-future video game quest

Think: retro video games, 80’s movies and TV shows, geek trivia, global cyber simulation, deteriorated earth, energy crisis, multi-billion dollar fortune, celebrity, bad guys, avatars, Star Wars

What’s cool about it: everything

What’s not: nothing

In a nutshell: it follows our narrator, Wade Watts, as he goes from a normal 18 year-old kid living in the stacks (trailers staked on top of each other) repairing computers and attending school in the OASIS (simulated cyber world now used by most of humanity), to the most famous avatar in the world after finding the first key in the easter egg hunt for OASIS founder James Halliday’s multi-billion dollar fortune.  Egg-hunters are known as gunters, and Wade, or Parzival, as his avatar is called, has spent years studying 80’s retro culture, which Halliday was famously obsessed with.  To complete the quest and win the fortune Wade must put his knowledge of video games, movies, and TV shows to the test, all the while outwitting his real world enemies, the IOI corporation, who are more than willing to kill players to prevent them from getting the egg.

Best bits: the nod to Blade Runner was exciting, as well as Parzival’s starship, which is a replica of Serenity from Firefly, re-named the Vonnegut

Keep an eye out for: Megagodzilla

Fun Fact: Ernest Cline wrote the screenplay for Fanboys, a great geek movie featuring appearances by Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian), Carrie Fisher (Leia), and William Shatner (Captain Kirk)

Tell your mates: if they love pop culture and video games
