The Dinosaur that Pooped the Past, By Tom Fletcher & Dougie Poynter

The two authors of this book are both musicians and songwriters, performing as part of the band McBusted. The transition from musical lyrics to rhyming picture book is interesting. They had a runaway success with their first book The Dinosaur That Pooped Christmas and this is the third in the series. It is probably the weakest.

If you are going to design a picture book for small children the ingredients of this book would be amongst your first ideas – dinosaurs, reluctant vegetable eaters, farts and enormous poop. And from that point of view, this book works. I guess the original title worked better given that Christmas is all about overindulgence and feeling like you may just explode. The illustrations in this book are colourful and will appeal to young children, as will be humour and adventure. But the rhyming is less than perfect at times, which you might get away with in a song, but it really detracts in a read aloud picture book.

If you are looking for a rhyming funny book, even one about dinosaurs, there are plenty of other picture books by New Zealand authors that would fit the bill better. Although small fans of the original in the series, will love this one I’m sure.

This is one of my 3 year old granddaughters favourite books. So funny and incredibly entertaining to read to a small person. I got as much pleasure out of reading it to her as she got out of listening to the story.
