This year marks the 25th anniversary of the children’s classic and award winning We’re Going on a Bear Hunt. If you don’t remember this book from your own childhood, I’d be very surprised. Even if you haven’t read it in years, it is surprising how fast the chants come back to you!
We’re Going on a Bear Hunt follows four children and their father as they go exploring beyond their back yard, to look for a bear. They battle long grass, a river, mud, a forest, and more, until they finally get a surprise and actually stumble into a bear! This book has been popular for so long, for a number of reasons. They chanting nature of the book is a great way to get kids really engaged with what is happening on the page, and the adventure, and sense of tension the builds throughout it is wonderful. As a parent it is great fun to read out loud too.
My daughter (3 years) loves reading it with me, particularly making the different noises, like “tip toe” and “squelch squerch”. In fact, since reading her this book a few times, I’ve heard her making the different noises as she walks around the house when she thinks no one is listening.
Ideal for children under four, if you don’t already have a copy of We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, your children are missing out!
