Freddy Bear and the Beach & Freddy Bear and the Green Peas, by Joy Cowley

It’s unlikely Joy Cowley will ever stop writing. With over 600 books and a whole host of awards to her name, she’s one of New Zealand’s most loved and best known authors. Now she brings us two more graded readers for pre-schoolers, Freddy Bear and the Beach and Freddy Bear and Green Peas from Upstart Press.

These whimsical board books feature Freddy Bear, a pre-schooler bear called Freddy. Freddy faces the problems of most toddlers in a supportive and safe environment. Freddy Bear and the Beach is a light-hearted look at potty training and the wee (couldn’t help myself) accidents toddlers have along the way.

Freddy Bear and the Green PeasFreddy Bear and the Green Peas explores the ferocious determination with which toddlers express their desire to eat a particular food – especially if that food is nowhere in the house.

Philip Webb’s illustrations are simple and classic. Mother and Father bear look rather old fashioned. These are books designed to be timeless rather than modern.

While they’re not going to set the world on fire with their originality, they’re also not designed too. They are however, gentle tales with Cowley’s trademark rhyme and attention to language, and Webb’s sweet illustrations, which, no doubt will keep toddlers and young learners turning the pages. These are wonderful reading aloud books for younger children.
