It’s great to see well-known New Zealand illustrator Donovan Bixley turn his hand to bilingual Te Reo/English board books for young readers.
Bright and bold, My first board book: Colours and My first board book: Animals are the first in the series of a planned four titles. With the growing use of Maori in early childhood and school curriculums, these sorts of resources are essential.
My first board book: Colours is based around the iconic Kiwi song ‘Ma is white’ , while also widening the scope to include colours not in the original song.
My first board book: Animals introduces the names for common animals such as dog (kuri ) cow (kau) and sheep (hipi) but also throws in a few less common ones such as crab (papaka) and bat (pekapeka).
Bixley’s lively, bright, bold and fun illustration style in these two titles will serve young readers as a nice introduction to his characters in other titles such as The Wheels on the Bus and Old MacDonald’s Farm.
Book such as My first board book: Animals and My first board book: Colours are essential recourses for use in early childhood centres and homes that are committed to speaking more Te Reo.
